Colonial War Monument (Aos Combatentes do Ultramar) - Lisbon - Portugal Photos

From 1961 to 1974, the Portuguese dictatorship, led by Antonio Salazar and then Marcello Caetano, fought to retain control of its African colonies of Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome, Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique against fairly determined and able national liberation movements. This was Portugal's Vietnam, and the names of all of Portugal's dead in these wars are commemorated on this memorial. The writing reads: 'To the combatants in the colonies'.
