The Corcoran Gallery of Art, a privately funded institution, was founded in 1869 as Washington, DC’s first and largest non-federal museum of art. The historic building was established as a private art gallery to house the extensive collection of Washington banker and philanthropist, William Wilson Corcoran (partner of the bank Corcoran & Riggs). Today, the Corcoran is a College of Art and Design and a gallery displaying one of the most comprehensive collections of American art in the world. It is known internationally for its distinguished collection of historical and modern American art as well as contemporary art, photography, European painting, sculpture and the decorative arts. The museum gift shop features art related books, cards, jewelry, and children's items.
