Views From The Sea Discoveries Monument - Wind Rose World Map
The Wind Rose has 50 meters in diameter and is minutely carved in marble of various kinds and colors, with a planisphere 14 meters. The ships and caravels embedded mark the main routes of the Portuguese Discoveries. The central map, depicting galleons and mermaids, shows the routes of discoveries in the XV and XVI centuries.
The Wind Rose is designed by the architect Cristino da Silva and was offered by the Republic of South Africa to Portugal. The design serves as terrace decoration to access the Discoveries Monument in Belem, Lisbon.
